The husband of a murdered woman wept in a Toms River courtroom Thursday as gruesome video of the crime seen was shown on the first day of the trial.Paul Weinstein's wife, Kathleen Weinstein, disappeared March 14, 1996 while on the way to a night class. Michael LaSane pleaded guilty to the murder, but the plea was thrown out eight years later. Prosecutors are now trying to convince a jury LaSane abducted the special education teacher and suffocated her.
The person who found Weinstein's body testified Thursday about the discovery. Another witness told the court Weinstein appeared to know LaSane when the two were seen talking in the Caldor Shopping Center parking lot. Prosecutors plan to play a 46-minute recording, which the victim secretly made in the final moments of her life. Weinstein is heard on tape begging for her life.
