The Hunts Point community may soon enjoy the sweet smell of success in a battle with a fertilizer plant.
Residents say they have complained for years about the offensive smells wafting from the New York Organic Fertilizer Company (NYOFCo), which turns sewage into pellets. They are also upset that NYOFCo continues to operate, despite environmental violations.
Several community groups have purchased stock from the NYOFCo in order to get the facility to listen to their concerns. They say officials have met with them and now promise to clean up their act. Area students are also surveying residents about the plant so they can submit the information to the city?s 311 information line.
