Hundreds of fishermen and shark enthusiasts gathered at Clark's Landing in Point Pleasant Saturday for the 24th annual Mako Mania Shark Tournament.
Organizers say more fishermen than ever were in attendance for the event. According to Captain Al Ristori, a fishing expert, the migratory mako sharks only visit the Jersey Shore one month each year, when the water is the warmest. Ristori says he once caught a mako that weighed 409 pounds, but the sharks can reach up to 1,000 pounds.
The first-place fisherman at the Mako Mania Shark Tournament won $40,000. A portion of the proceeds earned at the event are donated to reef building and conservation.
