Bergen County prosecutors say human remains were identified after they were found three weeks ago in Overpeck Creek in Ridgefield Park.

Authorities say Charles Murphy went missing about 40 years ago. He was 26 and from Maywood.

According to prosecutors, a dive team from a nonprofit company saw evidence that something was in the water and notified law enforcement of its discovery. In a joint operation on May 3, authorities said county divers confirmed the presence of submerged artifacts, which appeared to be 40 years old.

Murphy went missing during the early morning hours of April 28, 1982, prosecutors say.

The specific circumstances surrounding Murphy's disappearance remain under investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office, Bergen County Sheriff's Department and the Ridgefield Park Police Department.
