Several families in Hopatcong have been without water for nearly two weeks after several of the borough's water pipes froze over.

Many have been relying on bottled water and even melted snow to get through day-to-day activities.

"I had to go to my daughter's house to do laundry and to take showers," says Maria Severin.

Hopatcong Mayor Sylvia Petillo told News 12 New Jersey that the pipes are too close to the surface and are too small, so the bitter cold temperatures of recent weeks have been enough to freeze the water. The recent snow, ice and rain have slowed repair crews, leading to the delays.

She says this is a problem the borough has been working to fix for years, but this year the weather got the best of Hopatcong.

Mayor Petillo explained that the town's infrastructure was originally built for a small summer resort community and cannot support a larger, year round population.

Residents are not happy.

"We can understand their point, but it seems like they don't care about us having water, or keeping us in the loop," says Donna Swistack.

Crews were out on Tuesday making repairs. Several families did get their water turned back on.

As of Tuesday evening, there were still four homes without water.
