Hoboken unveils new Sept. 11 memorial
The city of Hoboken unveiled its new memorial to the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks on the 16th anniversary of the event.
The city unveiled the memorial at its annual service in Pier A park. The interfaith ceremony is filled with prayer, reflection and the reading of the names of the local victims. Hoboken lost 56 citizens during the attack.
The new memorial is made up of 56 glass panels to represent each of the lives lost. The victims’ names and birth years are engraved on the panels.
The memorial will be lit up at night and is surrounded by a grove of trees, which were planted in 2002 to honor the victims.
The perimeter of the memorial includes steel plates engraved with quotes from family members and others who experienced the devastation. The memorial lines up with the World Trade Center Site in Manhattan.
Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer says that it is important for the city’s residents to have a place to reflect on and remember those who were lost.
