Hoboken will have a new mayor for the first time in eight years.

Incumbent Mayor Ravi Bhalla did not seek a third term. He won a spot in the State Assembly, leaving the seat open.

The crowded six-candidate ballot is now down to a two-person race after no one secured 50% of the vote.

The city is set to hold a runoff election between Councilwoman Emily Jabbour and Councilman Michael Russo. Jabbour celebrated her lead at Finnegan’s Pub after receiving 26 percent of the vote.

“We were the top vote-getter, which is a very exciting message from this community,” Jabbour said. “I am deeply, deeply humbled and grateful for the support I received tonight. And now, we look to Dec. 2.”

Russo earned the second spot with more than 4,500 votes, surpassing four other candidates. “This needs to be a safe city,” Russo said. “We’re talking about those quality of life issues, right? Those e-bikes on the streets, the rat problem that we have.”

The runoff election is set for December 2.
