A Brooklyn organization that's been serving immigrant families for 22 years is holding a celebration next week for Hispanic Heritage Month.
The nonprofit Mixteca serves Latin American immigrant families in the Sunset Park community, providing free supportive services that include, but are not limited, to adult education, mental health and wellness classes and immigration services.
Organizers say the group's work is twofold: "on the one hand it's handing out food and dealing with basic needs, and on the other it's creating a community and reaffirming a people and a culture."
On Thursday Sept. 22, Mixteca will be hosting an outdoor market at its headquarters, and inviting members of the community to come for staple foods like chiles, tortillas and cilantro.
