Classes were canceled at a Jersey City high school Wednesday after several athletes came down with herpes simplex virus type one.
Five members of the Saint Peter?s Prep wrestling team came down with the virus, which usually shows up in the form of a cold sore or other skin lesion. School officials say the students started showing symptoms after their first wrestling scrimmage of the season on November 30 against Nutley and Livingston.
Saint Peter?s voluntarily canceled classes for all of its 907 students until after the new year. It also suspended wrestling practice. One student at Nutley High School was also diagnosed with the virus, however, that school only suspended wrestling practice for a few days. Nutley school officials add that all of the machines and floors were cleaned. Meanwhile, Saint Peter?s will resume classes January 3. Wrestling practice will resume December 23.
