New Jersey is under an excessive heat warning for the next several days as temperatures rise into the 90s.
It hit 99 degrees at Newark Liberty International Airport by Monday afternoon, tying a record set back in 1993.
A restaurant in nearby Millburn decided to close early – putting employee safety ahead of profits.
There is no air conditioning in the kitchen of the Millburn Deli on Millburn Avenue. Staff there say that temperatures could get above 110 inside the kitchen.
Management says that it was too hot on Monday to let their kitchen staff stay in those conditions, so they made the decision to close early. The location in Morristown will also close at 3 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday.
“Today’s really hot…We’re letting our staff take a short day. They deserve it,” says manager Tianna Ramirez. “We don’t want to wear them out and we need them as much as they need us.”
The deli normally stays open until at least 5:30 p.m. and gets a sizable afternoon and evening dinner crowd.
Other restaurants around the state also seem to be taking a financial hit because of the weather. Outdoor dining is not a popular choice during this type of heat.
