(01/23/06) NEWARK ? State health officials closed a facility for the mentally ill in Newark Monday based on years of complaints.
Bob Davison of the Mental Health Association says he found deplorable conditions at Eden House during a surprise inspection two years ago. According to Davison, he found puddles of urine in hallways and dead rodents on the floor. He also says patients weren?t getting their proper medication and many of them were living without bedding.
State officials say none of the 45 Eden House residents will be left on the street. The needs of each person will be evaluated and decisions will be made for appropriate housing. Representatives of Eden House could not be reached for comment.
