(03/09/06) WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP ? Some state lawmakers are attempting to do away with a measure designed to preserve open space in New Jersey.
The Highlands Act, instituted by former Governor James McGreevey, protects natural resources in various parts of New Jersey. However, some lawmakers have introduced a bill to strike the measure down because they feel it was a mistake. Those against the Highlands act say it takes property away from landowners without proper compensation.
Critics say it?s time to do away with the Highlands Act and start over with better legislation. Residents who support the act say it is necessary to prevent New Jersey?s large population from placing a strain on limited natural resources.
