A community watchdog group in Asbury Park says thieves are using bikes for quick getaways, and some victims are afraid to come forward.
Police say only a few incidents have been reported involving thieves, sometimes armed, robbing people and using bicycles to get away. The group, Citizens on Patrol, says it has received several complaints in the past few months of robbers on bikes. It says many of the attacks happen on Main Street.
According to the group, most victims are not reporting the crimes because of their immigration status. Group members say some of the robbers know illegal immigrants don?t have bank accounts, so they target them on pay day when they have cash on them.
Community leaders say residents should walk in groups and in well-lit areas to avoid attacks.
