New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy signed legislation Friday morning that bans smoking at all public beaches and parks in the state.
He signed the legislation at the Cottage Place Pavilion in Long Branch.
First time offenders will pay $250 with fines going as high as $1,000.
Many Jersey Shore towns have already banned smoking at its beaches, including Ocean City, Asbury Park, and Point Pleasant Beach.
The bill does not address who is responsible for enforcing the ban.
Gov. Phil Murphy said, “This time next year the only smell most New Jersey beachgoers will be enjoying will be the scent of the salt air and maybe the aroma of some grilled sausage, French fries, funnel cakes wafting off the boardwalks.”
