Gov. Phil Murphy says that he wants women’s reproductive rights to be set in state law.
The governor met via Zoom with Democratic legislators and Planned Parenthood. He urged the Legislature to pass the Reproductive Freedom Act, which would expand access to birth control and care for pregnant women – including abortion.
The urging comes as the United States Supreme Court gets ready to consider Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban.
“We always unfortunately expected this to happen, and it has happened with the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to consider Mississippi's draconian abortion law in the fall. The prospect that Roe could now be overturned is more real than ever,” Murphy said.
The Supreme Court will not consider the case until at least October when the court's next term begins.
