Gov. Murphy signs sweeping legal restrictions on carrying concealed weapons
Gov. Phil Murphy has signed sweeping restrictions on concealed weapons into law.
The new law comes in reaction to the Supreme Court’s decision to lift restrictions on carrying concealed guns.
State law will now require gun owners to get insurance and training before carrying, set up numerous gun free zones, and require private property owners to post a sign if they allow guns inside.
“My most sacred responsibility as governor is protecting the welfare of all 9.3 million people who proudly call our state home. This responsibility includes doing all that I can to protect our residents from senseless gun violence and to help law enforcement in keeping our communities safe,” said Murphy.
Republican lawmakers say the bill is unconstitutional and vow legal challenges.
The governor says the bill is structured so that if one provision is ruled unconstitutional, others can remain in place.
