Gov. Phil Murphy is weighing in on the federal assault charges Democratic Rep. LaMonica McIver is facing related to an altercation outside an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Newark earlier this month.

Prosecutors say McIver pushed and grabbed ICE agents outside Delaney Hall while agents were attempting to arrest Newark Mayor Ras Baraka for trespassing.

Murphy made the comments while participating in News 12 New Jersey’s “Ask Gov. Murphy” program.

"I think the one thing that I've adhered to since my first day as governor is, on a law enforcement or judicial or legal matters, I'm not gonna get into who did what to whom here,” he said.

The governor then stated that McIver had every right to be at Delaney Hall to inspect the facility where detained immigrants were being held.

“I would argue, even though Mayor Baraka isn't a congressperson, he had every right to inspect that building and I hope this gets resolved sooner than later,” Murphy said.

The governor also stated that he thought McIver was “doing a fantastic job” in Congress and has “been hitting the cover off the ball down there.”

South Carolina Rep. Nancy Mace has called for McIver to be expelled from Congress amid the assault charges.

McIver is expected to be back in court on June 11.
