Gov. Phil Murphy says that he agrees that the prices to park at the newly opened American Dream megamall seem to be too high.
The complex partially opened in East Rutherford last week – a project that was nearly two decades in the making. It features amusement parks, entertainment options, restaurants and retail space.
But many New Jerseyans were shocked to learn that it could cost up to $30 to park at American Dream – a price that the governor agrees may be a bit too much.
Parking for up to 30 minutes is free at American Dream. But the price increases the longer one stays. The complex also features valet parking for an additional $10.
Murphy made the comments on Tuesday’s episode of “Ask Gov. Murphy” that airs on News 12 New Jersey. He was answering a question asked by North Arlington resident Eric Cagman.
“I have some sympathy, I have to say, on the question of $30. That sound like you’re taking it through the nose, I have to agree with you there,” Murphy said.
Murphy attended the grand opening of Nickelodeon Universe with his wife last Friday. He said that he rode “the scariest ride I ever have ridden in my life” at the park. Nickelodeon Universe announced Tuesday that the park would be raising the price for an all-access pass from $49.99 to $79.99 and the price for general access from $39.99 to $59.99 come Nov. 15.
“[American Dream] has to be affordable and accessible, partially for the Jersey crowd. This has been in our back yard. We’ve had this cross to bear for 17 years. We ought to get a hometown discount, I agree with that,” Murphy said.
More portions over American Dream are expected to open over the next several months.
