After several delays, the results are in for the state English exams for Bronx and city students.
Fourth-graders pulled in decent marks this year and successfully maintained last year?s historic jump in passing grades. According to a Daily News report, more than 58 percent passed compared to 2004?s 49 percent. Eighth-graders also fared well on the reading and writing exam.
However, along with the good comes the bad. The Daily News reports the number of students who failed by scoring a one, the lowest possible grade, increased by almost 50 percent in both fourth and eighth-grade. Some education officials say the failing trend doesn?t overshadow how well students did this year. Meanwhile, others say the failures prove a big disappointment for the Department of Education.
