Bobbi, the 9-year-old girl who had the police called on her for killing lanternflies on her street in Caldwell, was honored in Montclair.
On Friday, Bobbi was honored at the Montclair Police Department by officers and state officials for her “community care taking.”
“It's important that she sees the representation and she feels the support from the representation,” said Montclair Police Officer Erica Peterson. “I just wanted her to feel the love that I had inside, and I just wanted to change that day for her.”
Peterson organized the event and said it was an opportunity to shine a light on a teachable moment for every town about racial bias, diversity, equity and inclusion.
Back in October, Bobbi’s neighbor called the police to report “a suspicious little Black woman with a hood, spraying trees.”
Bobbi's mom, Monique Joseph, spoke to News 12 and said this is a teachable moment for the community.
“I wanted to make sure that these girls understood that no matter what, no matter who it is, your mother is going to stand up for you,” Joseph said. “And the blessing is, it's not just me. I have all of these people here with us.”
“It's been turned, a bad situation into something good,” Joseph said.
