A heroic rescue by two off-duty firefighters wasn?t enough to save a young girl from a house fire Sunday.
Authorities say the fire, which started after 7 a.m. on the second floor of a three-family home, claimed the life of the girl and injured her little brother. Officials say two women who lived on the floor were hospitalized at Saint Barnabas. Two people who lived on the third floor climbed down a fire escape, according to officials.
Firefighters Glen Spadone and Keith Bierwisch were at a convenience store after finishing their shifts when they saw the flames. The firemen, along with neighbors, helped carry out a wheelchair-bound woman and alerted others. The fire is under investigation.
