Peacock pride was on full display in Jersey City Sunday as the St. Peter’s men's basketball team returned home Sunday after the Peacocks bested Murray State Saturday night.
Excited students welcomed the team home with a pep rally fit for heroes at the school gym.
Team members said it felt good to have the support of not just their school and Jersey City, but also throughout the tri-state area as they advance to the Sweet Sixteen. They said they're already looking ahead to their next game.
"We practice so hard, we work on preparation, we're just getting ready to focus on the task at hand and we're just going to try to go out there and give 100% and leave it all out on the court," said St. Peter's Point Guard Doug Edert.
The Peacocks are the third 15 seed in NCAA Tournament history to make it this far after stunning wins over Kentucky and Murray State.
Head coach Shaheen Holloway was asked if this moment was intimidating.
"I'm going to say this. It's going to come off a little crazy. I've got guys from New Jersey and New York City – you think we scared of anything? You think we're worried about guys trying to muscle us and tough us out? We do that. You know, that's who we are."
The Peacocks are the first New Jersey team in the Sweet Sixteen in more than 20 years. They will face the winner of Texas/Purdue. Tip-off is 8:20 p.m.
