As many small businesses struggle to keep their doors open, a bakery in Passaic County is proving they can have their cake and eat it too.
Gencarelli's Bakery is opening a new location at the corner of Hamburg Turnpike and St. Moritz Place in Wayne. The family-owned, and operated business started as a small bakery in Bloomfield, only making bread.
Since then, it has expanded to a larger storefront on Broad Street in Bloomfield - and a second location inside the Ramapo Plaza in Wayne.
The new location will be an Italian kitchen and market, that features a deli with made-to-go orders, coffee, and gelato and an expanded bakery.
The owners owe their success and expansion to being able to wear many different hats.
"If you're not experienced. If my donut guy calls out, I can jump right in. If my bread guy calls out, I can jump right in. If my decorator calls out, I can jump right in. And the same goes for my brother and my sister, so that makes it a little bit easier, but it's very difficult to run a full-line retail bakery today and I think that's the reason why you see less and less," said co-owner of the bakery, Vincent Gencarelli.
The bakery inside the Ramapo Plaza will move out of its location when construction on the market opens mid- to late- summer.
Gencarelli's Bakery in Bloomfield will stay open.
