A 17-year-old boy from Garwood is facing charges for allegedly running over two 17-year-old girls who were riding an e-bike in Cranford.
The boy, whose name was not released due to his age, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder. The Union County Prosecutors’ Office says the teen struck the girls and then drove away. The incident happened just before 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 29.
A makeshift memorial now stands outside 45 Burnside Ave. where the girls were killed. There has been a steady stream of people coming by to leave flowers, stuffed animals, balloons and cards. Many are also saying prayers and paying their respects.
“We would like to thank the members of the public for their assistance with this investigation as well as members of the Union County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force and Cranford Police Department for their diligent work during this investigation,” Union County Prosecutor William Daniel wrote in a statement. “We hope that this arrest will begin to provide some measures of comfort for the families and loved ones of the victims.”
Authorities are asking anyone with information about the incident to come forward. They are asking anyone who lives on Hillcrest, Burnside or Lincoln avenues to check their doorbell cameras for any video that may show the suspect’s vehicle – a 2021 Jeep Compass with tinted windows.
Anyone who may have information about the incident is asked to call Union County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force Detective Alex Lanza at 908-370-4318 or Cranford Police Detective Jason D’Agostino at 908-276-0171.
