Family, friends and law enforcement officers gathered in Newark on Friday to bid farewell to Police Sgt. Joseph Azcona, who was killed in the line of duty last week.

Officers from local departments and state police lined the streets outside the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, showing support for Azcona’s family.

Azcona was promoted from detective to sergeant during the service.

Law enforcement members said the display was also a message that when one of their own is lost, the pain resonates through the entire community of officers.

News 12 New Jersey’s Tony Caputo spoke with law enforcement officials and the widow of a Jersey City police officer killed in 2018, reflecting the shared grief among those who serve.
