Friends, family and fellow police officers braved the cold in Roseland Monday to begin saying goodbye to a Newark police sergeant killed on the job.
Sergeant Tomasso Popolizio died while working to stop dangerous drag racing on Doremus Avenue. Police charged 20-year-old William Rodriguez with leading police on a chase that caused the officer?s death.
Monday night?s wake was the first of several services remembering the 33-year-old sergeant. The 12-year veteran of the Newark police force will be laid to rest Wednesday. Meanwhile, Rodriguez is set to be arraigned in court Tuesday.
