(04/03/06) OAKLAND ? Two people were killed Monday morning when a freight train smashed into their dump truck at an Oakland railroad crossing.
Witnesses say the truck and its occupants, who were employees of a landscaping company, cut ahead of several cars at the crossing and ignored warning signals. The freight train broadsided their car and dragged the vehicle 60 feet before the truck caught fire. Although onlookers attempted to help the two men from their truck, witnesses say the vehicle was too badly crushed for any rescue attempt.
The crossing does not have a gate, but a representative for Susquehanna and Western Railway says all equipment was working properly. Lights and bells sounded to warn motorists of the approaching train.
