Former Edison police officer sentenced for 2023 DUI crash that killed 2 people

Prosecutors say Amitoj Oberoi was off duty during the time of the crash on Route 27 that killed two of the passengers in his car.

A former Edison police officer was sentenced to 15 years in prison for killing two people in 2023 in a DUI crash in Franklin Township, Somerset County prosecutors announced on Thursday.
According to authorities, Amitoj Oberoi was drunk while off-duty during the time of the crash on Route 27 that killed two of the passengers in his car, Carlos Perez-Gaytan and Victor Cabrera-Francisco, on Aug. 27, 2023.
Oberoi was fired from the Edison Police Department following the fatal crash. He was sentenced on first-degree vehicular homicide and on a motor vehicle offence of driving while intoxicated.
The No Early Release Act requires Oberoi to serve 85% of the sentence without eligibility for parole.
