A former Dumont mayor has been charged in the sexual assault of a juvenile, according to Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella.

Musella says Andrew LaBruno, 44, made contact with the minor online before arranging to meet.

The alleged assault happened while the juvenile was home alone in Englewood.

LaBruno has been charged with first-degree aggravated sexual assault, second-degree sexual assault and third-degree endangering the welfare of a child. He was remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending a detention hearing in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack.

LaBruno serves as a police sergeant in Jersey City and previously ran for a seat in the state Assembly.
