Firefighters are calling a 5-year-old Mendham girl a hero Friday because she knew exactly what to do when her family?s house caught fire.
Fire officials say the flames began near a wood-burning stove in the Hafemeister family?s two-story farmhouse on Ironia Road Thursday. The girl, Sara, says she ran to wake her brother after smelling smoke and seeing the flames. Sara says she couldn?t wake up her brother, so she ran to wake up her parents.
All four family members survived the fire and were uninjured. Sara?s mother says she doesn?t want to think about what may have happened if Sara hadn?t sprung into action.
