It was a scary situation for a New Jersey dog owner and his new pup when the dog got loose and jumped into the water near the Bayonne Bridge.
"You have the Newark Bay, you have the Arthur Kill and then you have the Kill Van Kull. All those currents converge at one point on the Bayonne Bridge here and quite frankly it's very difficult to swim there,” says Bayonne Fire Chief Keith Weaver.
The owner had only just adopted the dog when it jumped into the water for a swim.
"The dog ran into the Kill Van Kull and swim around the base of the bridge, so that prompted a response from the Bayonne fireboat and also the New Jersey task force,” Weaver says. "Our firefighters then encountered the dog on the west side of the bridge on land. They began to approach it to corral it again and to try and reunite it with its owner and then it jumped in the water again and swim 30 yards offshore."
Weaver says that eventually, a diver was able to jump into the water and rescue the dog-- who had just been spayed and was wearing an inflatable collar. He says that it acted as a life jacket for the dog.
The dog was reunited with her owner after the rescue. Weaver says this is the first time in his career he's encountered a water rescue for a dog.
