Firefighters from several departments battled a building fire in Somerville early Saturday morning, according to the Somerville Fire Department.
Crews from Somerville and Raritan were dispatched around 6:30 a.m. to a fire at the corner of Catherine Street and North Gaston Avenue.
Fire officials said heavy flames were coming from the front of the building when crews arrived. Firefighters deployed three hose lines to battle the flames, but difficult conditions inside the building complicated their efforts.
Crews also cut through the roof to ventilate the structure.
The fire was brought under control at 7:55 a.m., and firefighters remained on scene to check for and extinguish hot spots.
The scene was turned over to the Somerville fire marshal around 9:15 a.m.
Fire departments from several surrounding communities assisted in the response.
The department did not provide information about injuries or the cause of the fire.
