A massive fire tore through a Wayne apartment complex Monday afternoon, causing the roof to collapse.
More than 100 firefighters battled the flames at the Mountain View Crossing luxury apartment complex off Route 23. The Wayne Fire Department confirmed the roof of building number 1, where the fire started, collapsed. Fire officials believe the fire began in a corner apartment on the fourth floor of the building.
Fire officials closed off all access to the complex. All of the people in the building were evacuated. According to the mayor, six apartments were destroyed, two had significant damage and 16 units had water damage. The building inspector says no one will be allowed into the structure Monday night. Temporary shelters have been set up for tenants and the Red Cross is also helping displaced residents. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
