Members of a Middlesex County synagogue are picking through rubble in search of any relics that may have survived a fire Thursday morning.
Dozens of firefighters rushed to the scene after a basement fire broke out at the Highland Park Conservative Temple on South 3rd Avenue in Highland Park. According to investigators, piles of old papers and records fueled the blaze. They say the fire quickly spread to the sanctuary above, burning a 60-foot hole in the ground.
Despite the extensive damage, firefighters were able to save nine Torah scrolls, which are the holiest items in the temple. Officials say the fire does not appear to be suspicious.
