Fire restrictions: Tips to help prevent future fires in New Jersey

The DEP says the Forest Fire Service has battled over 350 wildfires since Sept. 15.

The entire state has been under Stage 3 Fire Restrictions for just under a month now.

The DEP says the Forest Fire Service has battled over 350 wildfires since Sept. 15.

They believe that most of the fires -- are started by human error.

"The vast majority of fires in the state of New Jersey are created from human cause whether that's intention or accidental. Could be faulty equipment, could be a cigarette out there , someone dumping ashes or something lighting them," said Jeremy Webber of the New Jersey Forest Fire Service.

In Englewood Cliffs, the fire department is asking residents to absolutely not park your car on top of a pile of dry leaves--- they say your car exhaust could cause a fire. Instead, they recommend to park at least 5 feet from a leaf pile.
