Fire kills 73-year-old woman in Franklin Township
A fire that broke out inside a townhouse complex in Franklin Township Sunday evening claimed the life of a 73-year-old woman, according to officials.
Maria Cisyk died Sunday when a fire sparked inside her Society Hill 6 townhome complex on Gregory Lane around 9:30 p.m. Officials say that firefighters tried to get into Cisyk’s home, but were unable to due to the amount of smoke and flames.
Neighbors tried to help before firefighters arrived.
“My husband and another gentleman broke the back window and they tried to get them out but they were overwhelmed by smoke,” says Dawn Genteel. “So then we woke up all the neighbors after I called 911.”
Officials say that Cisyk died from smoke inhalation.
The fire is believed to have started in the kitchen and does not appear to be suspicious, according to officials.
Four other condos were damaged and were deemed uninhabitable by inspectors.
