A fast-moving fire destroyed eight apartments Tuesday morning in Middlesex County.
The fire broke out in Building 19 of the Willowbrook Apartments in North Brunswick.
Fire officials say two firefighters escaped injury after a ceiling collapsed on them. All of the building's tenants were also able to escape the blaze without injury.
North Brunswick police have confirmed that one of their officers found a woman on a balcony with her baby calling for help. The police officer convinced the woman to drop her baby and then jump herself. The officer caught both the woman and the child. They were taken to the hospital to be checked out, but are expected to be OK.
Witnesses tell News 12 New Jersey that a passerby first noticed the smoke and ran into the building to knock on doors and warn people to evacuate.
Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire. North Brunswick police say that the eight units inside Building 19 are uninhabitable and that residents will have to find another place to stay for now.
The American Red Cross is helping 21 displaced residents find shelter and essentials.
