A fast-moving fire that sparked overnight destroyed a vacant building in Mount Hope.

The flames started in the basement of the East Tremont Avenue building just before 1 a.m. Monday and traveled up all three floors. Fire officials say it was under control by 3 a.m., but they are continuing to monitor for hot spots.

More than 130 firefighters from 33 units responded to the fire. They say the fire was heaviest in the basement due to a large amount of debris.

Nearby residents say the building used to house a grocery store, but it shut down in 2013. Since then, they say a large number of homeless people have taken refuge in the building.

Officials say no civilians were injured in the fire. One firefighter suffered minor injuries but is expected to be OK.
