A new provision in the federal budget would allow tolls on interstates, according to U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez.
The senior New Jersey Democratic senator says tolls on interstates such as 78 and 80 shift more costs to the states.
"If you want to get money, then one of the things that you have to do is to, in essence, toll roads that aren't tolled," Menendez says.
The budget also cuts the major funding source to replace existing rail tunnels plagued by recent breakdowns, known as the Gateway Project, according to Menendez. AAA warned that could only lead to more people on already crowded roads.
Changes could still be made to the budget once Congress is finished with it.
Menendez also sounded the alarm about proposed cuts to Amtrak contained in the budget.
