FBI releases preliminary numbers on hate crimes in New Jersey

The FBI reported 220 crimes in total but says this number is not final because only 184 of New Jersey’s 578 law enforcement agencies released their data.

The FBI has released new data about the number of hates crimes in New Jersey for 2021.
The bureau reported 220 crimes in total but says that this number is not final because only 184 of New Jersey’s 578 law enforcement agencies released their data.
The FBI says that 92 of the 220 crimes were committed against Black residents. Twenty-five were against the Jewish community. Incidents against gay men, Hispanics and members of the transgender community were the top types of bias crimes, according to officials.
The FBI also says that 156 out of the 220 crimes were classified as “intimidation.” Damage or vandalism to property were the second most common crime, with 55 incidents.
Simple assault, aggravated assault and larceny were also reported.
