A vicious, deadly attack turned into a 90-mile police chase up the New Jersey Turnpike Thursday.
State police say 26-year-old Brian White, of Texas, tried to sell 75-year-old Michail Makarenko, of Virginia, religious CDs outside the J Fenimore Cooper rest area in Mount Laurel. They say when Makarenko said he wasn?t interested, White beat him to death with a rock.
According to police, several people witnessed the attack. One of the witnesses followed White in his car and called police to give them White?s description and location. Police chased White through six counties on the Turnpike and Route 80 until he pulled over in Teaneck. Authorities say White charged a pair of troopers when he got out of his vehicle, but was quickly subdued.
White is charged with first-degree murder and eluding police. His bail is set at $750,000. State police believe the victim was chosen at random.
