The family of a murdered Roselle Park teen read their victim impact statements in a Union County courtroom Friday in front of the teen?s killer ? her mother.
Lynn Giovanni pleaded guilty in October to fatally beating her daughter, Nicole, with a hammer and shovel while the teen slept in 2005. Giovanni also agreed to a 30-year prison sentence for the murder. The teen?s father, John Giovanni, said he originally wanted a jury trial against Lynn, but didn?t want to put his children through the ordeal.
John, Nicole?s brother and sister, as well as her friend all read statements to the court while Lynn sat emotionless. John also discussed how close he was to having Nicole move in with him because he says Lynn didn?t want to take care of the teen. While John says he will never have closure in his daughter?s death, he is working on the creation of a new law to increase penalties for child killers.
