Paula Smith died from complications of the coronavirus at just 60 years old. She was buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Hillside.
Her family tells News 12 New Jersey that the family gathered for the burial and watched as the white casket was lowered into the ground. They said that everything seemed normal, so the family left before any dirt was placed on top.
But they were told a few days later that something was wrong. Over the weekend, they found Smith’s casket unearthed and open. And they couldn’t tell if the body was still inside.
The family contacted the cemetery’s management and did not get any answers. They were told to get a lawyer and contact the state.
News 12 also reached out to the managers and were told to contact the board of directors.
State Assemblyman Jamel Holley is investigating. He tells News 12 that there are several families impacted by this kind of treatment and says that he plans on calling on the state to investigate.
