A dog that was presumed missing following a deadly house fire in Hazlet on Friday has been found dead.
It occurred early Friday morning on Brookside Avenue. Officials say Jackie Montanaro died after attempting to save her 6-year-old daughter, Madelyn. They were both taken to the hospital but succumbed to their injuries.
It was assumed that Duchess, the family dog ran away during the fire. Members of the community banded together to find the beloved pet, but the victims’ family confirmed on Monday that Duchess never made it out of the home.
"We want to express our profound thanks to the Hazlet community and surrounding towns for their tireless efforts to search for Duchess and their ongoing support for our family," Montanaro’s brother-in-law, Domenico Montanaro, said in a statement. "We feel all of your love and are so appreciative of how everyone has come together in this unspeakably trying time. Thank you."
A vigil will be held at Veterans Park in Hazlet on Tuesday at 6 p.m. Viewings will be held at Holmdel Funeral Home on Wednesday and Thursday, from 4 to 8 p.m. The funeral will be held at St. Benedict’s Church in Holmdel on Friday at 10 a.m.
The Hazlet Police Department says that the Raine Foundation, the Monmouth County Boy Scouts and a GoFundMe page are collecting donations for the family.
