It is fall after all. Fall back in the news 12 this morning we're live in Wayne and Lauren do. Is that Laurie's homemade candies and Lauren? It looks like you won the golden ticket today. What are you making there? We are making apples, candied apples. Caramel covered apples dipped in chocolate. We have Laurie, we have Nancy here. This is the spot to be. All right, Laurie, you are the what are you making this morning? Homemade hard candy apples. So how do you eat those? The best way of eating it is to cut it in half and make slices? That's a good idea. So you don't crack your teeth. And how many apples do you have? Well, we're gonna make a couple of 1000 this week, a couple of 1000. Just this week, Nancy. You're busy at work. But what are you making over here? You're making happy apples. Oh, happy apples. I'm an old, this one. Like how is this? A happy apple is first dipped in caramel and then covered in chocolate and then he's given a personality. So with homemade candied eyes, pumpkin hat and to make him smile. What kind of personality? Would you say this is, he's the happiest. Happy Apple we have. There's so many other kinds. Right. Laurie. Yes, we have witches and vampires and monsters. Fall back into News 12. This morning we live in Wayne. And Lauren do is at Laurie's homemade candies and Lauren. This shop has a rich history. Tell us about it. It does. And Dara, I found the golden ticket just for you, Laurie. You make everything here. This is such a sweet, please. Oh, thank you. All the chocolates are handmade here. This is absolutely stuffed and packed with chocolate. But there's a rich history behind it too. So tell us about the history. I started in 1978. I went to school in Philadelphia. My teacher taught one student at a time and I'd come home, I'd go on a Saturday, come home and practice making chocolate. I opened a store in Midland Park in 1979 and I moved to Wayne in 1981. So I've been here 34 years now and this all started with, with your mom, right? Your mom made a picture of her too and she's watching, by the way. Good morning mom. Hi mom. Yeah. So how did it all start with her? Well, she was my bookkeeper and she just helped and everybody encouraged me and this is it? This is what, so how has it grown over the years of tremendously? We had a fire in 95 and we rebuilt the store and we have loyal customers from day one. I mean, you hear so many times about candy shops, you know, not making it. Why do you think your candy shop has been making it? And there's more pages in that book, by the way. So you do plan on it. It's all made with love. We appreciate that. Thank you so much. We do want to try some chocolate. I'm going to go with probably some coconut. I'm one of those. I love coconut. What, what's your favorite filling? And a chocolate? All right. Well, fall back into news 12. We live this morning in Wayne and Lauren do is at Laurie's homemade candies and la. And we understand that this place has been open since the late seventies. It has. So you bet the price is chocolate has definitely changed. Hopefully, I don't have chocolate in my teeth because we've been eating chocolate all morning. And Laurie Nancy, this is the cocoa pan, which is a combination of both our favorites. Yes. Dark Moss. My favorite. Ok. So we're going to eat that. But let's go with the price of chocolate because this book, Nancy is fantastic. So, candy apples that we were just dipping 45 cents each. What are they at now? 05 95. All right. And then the uh almond butter Crunch was 5 25 32 95 and one more. One more favorite at home. The pound of chocolate was the assorted box of chocolates. About five bucks, 3295. So why has the price gone up over over 40 years? Cocoa bean production, climate change. It's crazy. It's going up almost 100% almost 100% last year. That's an incredible amount and you obviously have to raise your prices so you can meet the demands like you can't buy an apple for 45 cents anymore. Right. Correct. And what do you do for customers? We try our best to absorb certain costs. We do not charge a credit card fee. So it's the same price whether you pay cash or charge as I'm chewing. What are the trends that you've noticed in customers? I would say everyone still is shopping. They may choose a half pound box or a quarter pound box versus the one pound or the pound and a half. But they are still shopping because they can't do without their favorites. I can't do without this. This is amazing. Laurie. Thank you. All right. And I know you've been around that shop, Lauren. So why don't you show us around? Let's show you around. Ok, so I just wanna say they do specialty candies and they personalize too. So for breast cancer Awareness Month, we're handing out our bracelets and you also are making chocolates and I love this, the pink ribbon and then um you could put a message on the back and it says nobody fights alone and I think that's pretty incredible. You have other ribbons here. You could put your, your own color that, that you want on here too. Yes, you can customize your color based on your charity. You can put a custom message. We'll do anything you'd like anything, even letters to leaves with sprinkles. You have everything in this store. Yes, we do favors for Christenings and baptisms, birthday parties. We have numbers letters, you know, candy too, all of it and Laurie your showcase. You make all these chocolates back here. What are in your showcases? We have all kinds of different covered pretzels. We have Oreos, chocolate dipped fruit slices, uh fruits, dried fruits, caramels, peanut butter, nut clusters, coconut and I have a new creation too. So, what is the new one? It's a butterscotch delight. And you have never tried this. We're gonna try this. I've been eating the coconut. Wr actually the peanut butter cups. R what are your thoughts? Can you give us a thumbs up, thumbs down, thumbs up from right. So, there you go. We said this is a true peanut butter cup. So, what, what do you say? We dive in and we try it. And now of course, let's work on Halloween. Let's do it. So we're outside beautiful day here. Homemade chocolates inside Laurie Nancy. What do you have going on for Halloween? Oh, we have all kinds of specialty apples for Halloween witches and wizards and ghost goblins and treats. And you do for all the holidays too. Right? Yes, we do. And when it's Valentine's Day, it's very popular. Telling me this over here turns out to be, that's our pickup area for all the chocolate covered strawberries, police directing traffic. No, it's a big deal. So Glen Pond Nursery, it's a big deal for you to have open here. What, what do you have here? It looks like there's moms and pumpkins, moms and pumpkins. We have a nice tin selection. Um, we also sell Christmas trees. We plant all our own flowers in the spring. We have vegetable plants and the tins are a big deal too because they're even going for Christmas Valentine's Day. We have ST Patty's Day ones also. And Easter Tins a beautiful selection. So you must really love what you do at. Oh, I do. I love the flowers and the chocolate. Speaking of chocolate, it's almost Halloween. You gotta be doing something special for Halloween. Right. Candy store. Yes. We're gonna be giving out a free chocolate treat to everyone that comes in the candy store on Halloween. There you go. Tell everyone where you're located.
