Outside the Fairfield Police Department sits the name of an officer who they say exemplifies the commitment to protect and serve - Officer James Ciampi.
After his recent cancer diagnosis, the community he serves is returning the favor.
"We are there for Jimmy...His fight has become our fight," said Chief Anthony Manna.
The 31-year-old Fairfield native started his career with the department in 2016. From being a part of the junior police academy and the department’s Special Olympics Snow Bowl flag football team, those who know him say he'll do anything for his community.
While he is unable to work right now, fellow police officers believe Ciampi will fight his battle with cancer, like he fights crime.
"He saved lives. He's got meritorious service awards where you know he's gone above and beyond...If we could have 50 Jimmy Ciampis on our department we would take it in a heartbeat," said Officer Stacy Chiarolanza.
Even the community and several businesses like il Panino Pizza and Deli are stepping in to help someone they say has done so much for them.
"He needs us right now and I think it's the right thing to do. We love him. We want him better quick," said Gina Cicchetti, the owner of Il Panino Deli.
This Wednesday the pizzeria and deli will donate 20% of all sales to support Ciampi.
The police department has also set up a GoFundMe and is also selling shirts and bracelets to help him with medical expenses.
"I just know that the public being behind him is actually giving him the strength to battle," said Manna.
Those in the community want Ciampi to know that no one, not even him, fights alone.
