An investigation is underway after a helicopter crashed at Essex County Airport Saturday afternoon.
The 33-year-old pilot was the only person on board. He's in serious but stable condition in the hospital.
Other details about the incident are still unclear.
Fairfield police say an eyewitness reported that the chopper got as high as 100 to 150 feet in the air, then started spinning before hitting the ground.
The pilot was found in the seat, partially leaning out of the cockpit, with injuries to his head.
Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura says, "Fairfield police and our folks responded, and the ambulance extricated him and took him to the hospital, our folks are still there. He has been upgraded to critical. He is not in good shape, hopefully, he'll be OK."
The airport was closed during the investigation and cleanup with some flights having been rerouted to airports nearby.
The Federal Aviation Administration is still investigating.
