On this Road Trip: Close to Home you can explore Long Island's whaling history, and see a whale boat from the 1800s.
At The Whaling Museum & Education Center in Cold Spring Harbor visitors can learn about Long Island's rich maritime history dating back to the 1700s, when settlers on Long Island made their livings and sometimes their fortunes from the bounty of the sea.
Right now, the museum has an exhibit called "From Sea to Shining Sea," exploring the triumph and challenges of African American whalers. Here are more events happening at the museum.
Along with the Black History Month exhibit, the museum is also hosting a fun event for children called the Narwhal Ball on Feb. 19, during the winter break.
