Hundreds of people who live inside a Plainfield apartment complex were forced out of their homes on Tuesday after the city issued a condemnation notice.
Residents at 501 and 515 West Seventh St. told News 12 New Jersey that the notice was posted on the front of the buildings around 4 p.m. They were told to be out of their homes within 24 hours.
The notice states the buildings violate building code 5.02(C), which states the lack of maintenance “constitutes an unnecessary hazard to safety and health,” according to the flyer. The building has been deemed unfit for human habitation.
But the residents tell News 12 that they were hardly given any notice and that many of them have nowhere to go.
The residents say that they plan to go to Plainfield City Hall Wednesday morning to plead for help.
News 12 has reached out to Plainfield officials for further information and is waiting to hear back.
