Some members of a Jersey City church are accusing a former priest of skipping the country with thousands of dollars in cash and church artifacts.
Some Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church parishioners say more than 70 religious artifacts and as much as half a million dollars in donations are missing. They believe Kyrillos Markopoulos, the priest who left in September after 13 years, is responsible for the missing items and cash. One church member even says he saw some church pews for sale on eBay.
Church members say trying to reach Markopoulos has been impossible. Some believe he has fled to Greece with the artifacts and cash. Meanwhile, other parishioners say Markopoulos is innocent. No charges have been filed in the case. Police say the investigation is stalled because they can?t find the person who made the police report on the missing items.
